- Biting your tongue
- Stubbing your toe
- A paper cut
- Hitting your funny bone
- Getting pinched
- "Pins and needles" when your limbs fall asleep
- Getting anything in your eye
- Waxing any hair off your body (it hurts WAY less then this)
When someone says needle, the first thing that comes to mind is a big painful hypodermic needle that got stuck into your arm as a kid and made you cry. It's no wonder the question I get asked the most is, "do the needles hurt?". While the acupuncture needles can have a certain sensation after they are inserted, few would call it pain. Hypodermic needles are used for the delivery of liquids therefore having a hollow edge to cut the skin, while acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to this, are solid and part the tissue rather then cut it. Acupuncture needles are much finer then hypodermic needles. About 10 acupuncture needles can fit into the head of one hypodermic! Because the acupuncture needles are so fine and due to the swiftness of the insertion, the pain reflexes on the nerve endings where they are inserted are not even stimulated. There are some area of the body that will always be more sensitive including the fingers, toes and palm, but it's generally nothing more then a quick little prick. Not even close to getting that immunization shot you received as a kid! If you're still not convinced, here is a list of things that acupuncture will hurt less then:
Uh oh! Did you just sneeze? Are you getting a little sniffle and feeling unusually exhausted? You may be getting sick! With this chilly weather, early evenings and general stress we all experience around the holidays it's no wonder you caught yourself a cold. Go home and make this soup quick! It will nip it in the butt immediately or at least shorten the duration of your cold. This soup may make you a little warm and sweaty feeling. That’s perfect! It means it’s working. Drink up!
